Code Green
...Shortly after Max's arrival, a code green was called. A "Code Green" meant that all available staff were to go to the area of my building where the code had been called, including administration. It meant an emergency was occurring and lives were in danger. Psychiatric hospitals like prisons have similar systems. In addition, Max formerly had been employed in both, and had known of the subtle differences, on former assignments.
In prisons, you have locked control stations, where personnel push buttons to activate the opening and closing of doors, and have visual contact of all rooms to monitor activity. Modern prisons, unbeknownst to the public, and most inmates, have also been built with listening devices inside the vents of each cell, so staff in the control room may also listen in to cell mate's conversations, as Max had done before.
It can be quite beneficial in minimizing violence, confiscating contraband, and solving unsolved crimes. It is Big Brother, but the vast majority in our prisons today are in need of extra supervision and direction. Therefore, Max never had much of a problem with it for those already convicted of a crime. Besides, the use of sign language is rampant in prisons to elude this type of detection. One of the many effects of my book, will lead to the inclusion of sign language being a course taught to future law enforcement, which Max was quite fluent in..."
