It was on his first day of his new job, and in his first meeting, that Max recognized the extent of the organized criminality within my walls. Most there were too deaf, dumb, and blind to recognize it, or compensated too much to acknowledge it. Max knew and was familiar with evil, but he had never seen it as so pervasive, and accepting as it was within my walls.
 
Max would become my beacon of light within my dark building of the damned. I loved him for what he represented, as much as any building could, yet I had no way to help him. I had become numb, and frozen as in a nightmare, unable to move, or help myself, let alone him. I was a building without life, yet somehow I had emotions.
 
 I had become the perfect victim, accepting my abuse, and the abuse I witnessed, thinking somehow I was at fault and deserved it, like an abused spouse. My years of witnessing abuse, and suffering abuse, had made me immune to abuse.
 
Max renewed my faith in the natural goodness of man.
