Bellevue Boy

By Rusty Cage

Through the bars, the sun goes

down

I sit alone in my padded cell

waiting for the morning to come

my baby's locked in room 101

(from 1984)

I know what the Doctor said about

the voices inside of my head

‘Can I find love in a place like this?’

'yeah a little dab'll do you

now' (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's

Nest)

We were out in the yard when I

first saw you there running your

fingers through your malnourished

hair

I asked you to be my woman,

yeah, and you said maybe

it ain't easy being crazy,

but I'm crazy for you baby

Chorus

I'll be your Bellevue boy

If you'll be my psychopathic

woman

we'll spend the rest of our lives

talking to ourselves, bouncing off

the walls all night

Bridge

l
like the spider eats the fly, (R.M.

Renfield, Dracula)

the bird eats the spider,

you take your pills, you wash it

down with apple cider

my friends they tell me they like

you, they live in my head

I think about you when they strap

me to the bed, yeah

Chorus

Another example of the similarities of psychiatric hospitals and prisons is shift change. Max had participated in each, and he had observed that it was the time the outgoing shift would exchange information with the oncoming shift of the major events of the day. It was about who had broken a rule, who was in seclusion, who to watch out for, and other pertinent information.

It was the time when usually I was being watched over by the least amount of staff. Therefore, I was most vulnerable or more accurately stated; those within my walls were most vulnerable. It was the most opportunistic time for patients/inmates to break rules. It was the best time for trading drugs, drug trafficking, consensual sex, or nonconsensual sex, as in rapes, or stabbing/shanking someone with whom you may have a beef, or committing suicide.

The process was easy. Example, if you wanted to have sex, you would have a friend distract an orderly through conversation with them facing your friend. You would always have the orderly/guard face your friend with the orderly/guard having their back to the area you are not wanting them to see, like a closet, or bedroom, where two patients/inmates could slip into to have sex unnoticed.

Yes, Virginia, not only does Santa Claus exist, but even the so-called crazies like, and do have sex, as do inmates, and most human beings on planet earth.

Max was aware of the practice, and would usually come in early to catch up on the news of the day, so when his intuition would tell him something was not right, he felt comfortable enough to walk out of the shift change meetings to walk the halls to make sure his patients were safe. Max had extremely sensitive intuition. I could see the abuse within my walls, but Max could sense it.

One time Max walked my unit, did his head count that was a constant for him, and came up two bodies short. He did a recount, so he could be aware of who was missing, and realized it was Betsy and Kent.

They were both Caucasian, in their twenties, and soon to be released. Max checked Kent’s room and it was empty, he then went to Betsy’s room and discovered Kent...
